Blog Update

So I feel like things are happening on my website lately. The blog has been more active, I added the music player, and I embedded the guestbook into the main page so you don’t need to navigate away. I’m really liking having my own little space on the web that I can put whatever I want and decorate it however I want. But the blog has never quite sat right with me on this new website. So I’m making another change, though this one won’t be apparent for a while.

My blog has been around a very long time, starting in 2006. Which is not near as impressive as it seems, when you realize that at one point there is a 13 year gap between posts! But I’ve always felt like I wanted to bring these posts with me whenever the blog restarts or evolves, because I like having that time capsule. When I started the blog, I believe it started on Squarespace. Then eventually I moved it all over to Wordpress. Then when I wanted to get away from Wordpress, I read up on static site generator programs, and figured out how to export it and I started using a program called Publii to publish the blog. I liked that I was able to change a lot with the layout of the blog. But something that I didn’t like, and helped me make the decision to change again was that Publii has some weird quirks, like I can’t edit my blog on any other computer besides the one I started it on. That makes it a lot less convenient when you just want to log on and add something, or do some editing, or something like that. But it also makes me worry that if something happened to my PC, I wouldn’t be able to easily access the blog anymore. There’s also the fact that I like having my site be something simple that I can open from anywhere, go into the html files and change things here or there, without being dependent on any programs.

So, I’m planning on changing the blog again, this time just using a bit of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. It’s running on a bit of code called Zonelets, which is free to download on Itch.io. Setting up and personalizing it was pretty easy. But the big problem with my current blog is I’ve kind of painted myself in a corner, as there’s no easy way to export the blog from Publii. So...I’m bringing each post over, one at a time. I’m starting with the oldest and will work my way up. It’s tedious, but the plus side is that when one of the big changes happened, I think from Squarespace to Wordpress, the images all broke, so the posts have been there the whole time, but none of the images have been. For most of the posts, I still have the images on my PC, so I’ve been trying to put them all back together. For some posts, like a trip to the Farmer’s Market I went to to look for old video games, those pics are pretty important! So I’m glad to finally be fixing a lot of the old stuff. Another reason I’ve wanted to make this change, is that right now my site is actually two different sites. While the main website is hosted on Nekoweb, the blog is on Netlify! I always found that to be a little messy, so I’ll feel better having it all be on one site in the future.

I have no idea how long this process will take, I’ve been doing a little bit every now and then. So for now nothing will really change, I’ll be putting up new posts on the blog like I’ve always been doing. And I’ll be putting everything over on the new one until it’s all there. The new blog will be here, which is probably the last time I’ll link to it until it’s ready.
