Nintendo Store's lost feature - DS engraving

Years and years ago, back when the original DS was absolutely huge, the Nintendo World store in New York offered a pretty cool feature where you could pay to have them engrave something on your DS! This is going back quite a ways now, so my memory on the whole thing is a bit fuzzy, but at least when I had it done, the process only took about a half hour. They had a binder of different images you could have engraved. You pick one, pay them, hand them your DS, and they take it back and work their magic on it.

I think the day I got mine done, I just went over to a local cafe or Starbucks or something, had a coffee, then came back and got it. I really wish I had taken some pictures of the options they had available in the binder, because besides the one I had done, I have absolutely no memory of what the other images were. Looking back on it, it must have been some kind of laser etching they were doing. I’ve always been really curious why they got rid of the service. Was it out of fear of being responsible if they damaged someone’s poor DS? Was it a safety issue? Using laser etching can be dangerous if there are unknown materials you’re engraving into. But whatever the reason, they didn’t appear to offer this for very long, I’m guessing less than a year.
Does anyone else out there have an engraved DS from the Nintendo World store in NY? I’d love to see some of the other designs. Or does anyone know how long it lasted and why they ended it?
