Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tv watch

My love of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is long-standing and well-established. I’ve enjoyed almost every incarnation of the TMNT in their TV, movie, and comic book universes. Well, maybe not TMNT 3...*shudder*...I said ALMOST every incarnation! But one recent version I had missed was the Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, which is based on the latest movie, Mutant Mayhem. I LOVED the Mutant Mayhem movie, and it might be my favorite of the TMNT movies. But the new series was locked behind the Paramount+ streaming services, and I just didn’t bother signing up to watch the new show.

But for Christmas my wife got me the season 1 DVDs, so I’ve been happily going through them, and so far they’ve been a blast! I’m five episodes in and I love the art style, the action and humor are great, and the voice acting has been wonderful. They got the same actors that played the turtles in the movie to come back and they once again do a great job.

The first four episodes have the turtles split up, each getting their own episode to themselves. While I’m usually a Donnatello fan in my adult life, I grew up a Michealangelo fan, and I think his episode is my favorite of these opening four. The voice actor really nails the vibe of the character, Mikey has a very laid back and loose attitude toward life. I think it also helps that he has a funny new character to play off of, and their back and forth is pretty funny; Rod starts off thinking he’s been taken hostage instead of saved, and the two of them have some funny back and forth. Raph’s story is my second favorite, and once again I think it helps that he has some new characters, the Purple Dragon gang, to play off of as well.

So far I’m loving the series, and the new villain, Bishop, seems interesting and a little complex. It looks like the next episode might introduce Metalhead, so I’m also looking forward to that! Of course, coming in now to the show, when it’s been announced that the seasons 3 and 4 that were previously given the green light have now been canceled, is a bit of a bummer. I’m trying not to let my nervousness about the future of TMNT ruin my enjoyment of this show in the here and now! I’ll probably post another blog about the show when I finish the season. Can’t wait!
